Roborovski hamsters
What are Roborovski hamsters you ask? Well, they are a very exclusive type of little hamster. They are native to the Gobi desert, Mongolia’s deserts and in parts of Russia and China. These hamsters are a very special type of desert hamster and also very new, only domesticated about twenty years ago. Roborovski hamsters have a very cute and attractive appearance, an interesting personality and some very unique qualities that make them special. I’m lucky to own two of these fascinating creatures.
Surprisingly, the Roborovski hamster’s physical appearance is very interesting and cute. They only measure 2cm at birth and 5-7 cm at adulthood. They usually have distinct white eyebrows and tan fur with black roots. Only Roborovski hamsters have no dorsal strip and have all white bellies found on all dwarf hamsters. Roborovski hamsters also come in white faced, lighter tan, and all white. Normally, Roborovski hamster have bullet shaped bodies and long hind legs to help them move faster. It’s difficult to believe but Roborovski hamsters should only weigh a maximum of 22-26 grams and live for an average of 4.5 years if taken care of properly. These are truly small and unique looking hamsters.
Typically, the personality of the Roborovski hamster is very remarkable. Roborovski hamsters will drink less water than the average hamster since they are a desert hamster meaning that they can adapt easier. They will want to live in groups or pairs. Often they will want a large cage with plenty of room to run around. You will have to buy a wheel for this hamster. A good cage for them is one with a lot of levels, toys, tubes and a hamster pen with an open top (make sure they can’t escape). The male hamster will not pee to indicate its territory since they have scent glands that can look like permanent pee stains. Most hamsters can’t swim but Roborovski hamsters can. When they swim the back end of their body will sink a bit and the front will look bigger, they steer with their front legs and will propel them selves forward with their hind legs, they can look they have been flattened. Usually. They are very restless unless they are sleeping and will not sit quietly on your hand like other hamsters they will want to run around and into your pockets and down your shirt. Sometimes they will sit on your hand if you are offering food but may also just seize it and go. Their personality makes them different from all other hamsters.
In my experience, the Roborovski hamster has some unique qualities. Incredibly Roborovski hamsters can fit through very tight spaces and flatten themselves so if you get a bar cage make sure they are strong, not bendable or flexible. They are very loyal and will stay together if one is stuck they will not only wait but, help out too. Often times they form such strong bonds that if one dies the other may get depressed. Roborovski hamsters also have less diseases then other hamsters if they are pure breed and live longer than other hamsters.
Lastly, Roborovski hamsters are not playthings even if they are small and they are not recommended for small children they are an intermediate or advanced kind of pet. They are adorable and liked to be watched not held just like a TV. Give them toys or something to eat and they will entertain you. Never play with them by hand, they will not bite but are extremely fast and will run away, also if they are still babies holding them will sometimes cause them to be scared for the rest of there lives, they are not to be handled unless recapture is needed. I am a proud owner of 3 of these Roborovski hamsters and hope that you will let one into your life too. Remember each pet is an individual and may not meet breed standards if you are adopting or buying a pet do your homework learn about your furry friend before you bring him home.
