Dwarf hamsters
There are three types of Dwarf hamsters: Chinese hamsters, Campbell hamsters, and Russian winter white hamsters. They can be more demanding then the Syrians, and are all smaller and more uncommon as well. All the Dwarf hamsters have a black dorsal stripe that runs the length of their back. Most have bullet shaped bodies and prominent eyes. These hamsters can all live in pairs, but have to be separated if they fight. Don’t separate them if it is just a little quarrel since once separated they can’t be put back together. If you keep them together make sure they are of the same gender or you will end up with more hamsters than you had bargained for since hamsters can reproduce as quickly as every 16 – 30 days.
Usually, Chinese hamsters are the most uncommon Dwarf hamsters. Often they look mouse-like with longer tails that measure 2-3.5 cm long. Their bodies are also longer and thinner than most hamsters. They are restricted to have as a pet in some places such as California unless you have a permit. Glass tanks are better for them since they are master escape artists and can squeeze through the bars.
Typically, Campbell hamsters are known to bite people more than other hamsters. They are more territorial and harder to tame. Often times Campbell hamsters are more susceptible to diabetes, which can kill the hamster. Make sure its family history is clean and look for key signs of the disease such as over-drinking and having trouble urinating. Normally, Campbell hamsters can’t eat sugary foods such as fruits, carrots, corn, yogurt drops, and peas.
While Russian winter white hamsters can look like Campbell hamsters, they are much friendlier, less territorial and are smaller than the Campbell hamster. They can have darker coats than the Campbell hamster, but they can turn white in the winter. Sometimes their coat is thicker in the winter so it can cover its feet. The Russian winter white hamster may be a more desirable pet then the Campbell hamster.
All these hamsters are a part of the Dwarf hamster family. Often times they can be mistaken for each other so watch for clear characteristics. These hamsters can all be interbred so if you want a pure bread hamster buy from a reputable breeder.
